Will Carter Dynasty League Rules

This is the official set of rules for all aspects of the league known as The Will Carter League. All rules are subject to change based on a league vote that receives a majority ruling.

I. Ownership

The Will Carter League is comprised of 12 owners who each own one fantasy football team. All owners are free to name their team as they wish and have full rights to all transactions, pick-ups or trades, that they wish. Six teams are members of the Kolasa Football Conference and six teams are members of the Topete Football Conference. Four teams are members of the Gow Football Conference, four teams are members of the Kolasa Football Conference, and four teams are members of the Topete Football Conference. Each owner is required to pay league dues in the offseason between fantasy years. The dues will be determined by the commissioner with input from league members. If an owner should wish to leave, a new owner will be decided by majority vote who will take over ownership of the previous owners team.

Starting in 2024, the three previous champion owners will draft new divisions every three years to determine the new GFC, KFC, and TFC. The first time this happened was the off-season after the 2023 season. The next time will be the off-season after the 2026 season.

II. Rosters

In 2014, rosters will consist of 14 player slots. The positions for each of these teams are QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, WR/TE, K, DEF, and five bench slots. In 2015, and for the entire future of the league thereafter, the roster will consist of 14 veterans and 3 rookie players (with the same starting lineup positions as 2014). Each team can only carry a maximum of 14 veterans and 3 rookies for a max total of 17 players. A rookie is defined as a first-year player that is eligible for his first year in the league (a player on IR for his entire rookie season is not a rookie in year-two). At the end of a fantasy season, rosters lock only to be unlocked the week before the next year’s draft, when the roster of 17 must be reduced to 14 as the rookie slot players are now veterans. You may also carry 2 players on IR (see IR rules for more info), so the roster can reach a max of 19 players. After the final game of every season, rosters for every team lock until the following year’s league start. The league year starts with the dropping of all the non-keeper players after the previous season at a date a few weeks after the real life NFL draft. You will drop players to get your roster to 14. Once the league year begins, trading is allowed, but you cannot pick-up players in the free agent pool. Those players remain there until the free agent draft.

Starting in 2018, the rosters will consist of 18 active spots and 4 taxi squad spots. The starting positions are QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR/TE, TE, FLEX, and DEF. The Taxi squad is up to 4 spots that are only filled by rookies you have drafted. Upon drafting the players, they will be placed either on the active roster or in the taxi squad. Once a player is on the active roster, they cannot go back into the taxi squad ever. No free agents can be placed into the taxi squad. Players in the taxi squad CAN be traded to another team and remain in the taxi squad.

Starting in 2021, a Superflex slot was added to starting lineups for 10 starting positions.

Starting in 2023, DEF was removed from starting lineups, leaving nine starting positions. An additional taxi slot was added for a total of five.

III. Draft

In 2014, the draft order is based off the NFL team results from the 2013 season. Each owner will select which draft slot they want, order of selecting determined by these 2013 results. The draft will be a snake draft (Odd numbered rounds go picks 1 through 12, Even numbered rounds go picks 12 through 1). Of your selections, be aware that only two players will be kept at the end of the season from rounds 1-5, but you could have all of your keepers come from rounds 6 and beyond. Note: anyone drafted in rounds 1-5 is only eligible to be a keeper from the 1- 5 rounds, even if an owner acquires the player in a trade or free agency. In 2015, the draft order will be determined by the previous year’s standings results, with a lottery for the bottom four picks. The lottery is determined as follows: The fourth worst team gets one name in a hat, the third worst team gets two names in a hat, the second worst team gets three names in a hat, and the worst team gets four names in a hat. Names will be pulled from the hat, starting with first and ending with fourth pick selection. After this, the fifth worst team gets the fifth pick selection, the sixth gets the sixth pick selection, all the way to the champion, who has the 12th pick selection. This is both the last year of snake draft and the last year where we pick our draft selection slot. In 2016, we have the first free agency draft and rookie draft. The order of the selections is the reverse order of the previous year results. Worst team gets first selection, champion gets last selection. The draft does not snake. The free agency draft is a live waiver wire period. Worst team has top waiver and best team has last waiver. First is the three round rookie draft where each team selects their three rookies. The order is the previous seasons standings reversed (worst gets first pick and champion gets last pick) and the draft does not snake. Next is the waiver wire draft. Teams can add players from waivers by putting in a claim and having the highest waiver wire spot. Once picked up, they must drop a player to keep their roster at 14 veteran players, 17 total. Their waiver number also moves to the back and all other owners move up one spot. This entire free agency draft continues until every owner is content with their roster and chooses not to make any other waiver moves. After this draft, your 17 player roster is complete, your waiver spot is determined by how the free agency draft ended, and all other players go to free agency and a free agency period opening is determined. Your roster must remain with a maximum of 14 veteran players.

Starting in 2019, roster size was 18 active and 4 taxi squad. In 2020, we will expand to 20 active and 4 taxi squad.

Also in 2020, the free agency draft was removed. The rookie draft is now just the draft in which rookies or veterans can be drafted at any of your picks.

In 2023, team defense was eliminated and roster size stayed the same at 20 active. But a fifth taxi slot was added per team.

In 2024, rookie free agent draft was introduced. Post three-round rookie draft, a live waiver period takes place with minimum starting bid of $25 FAAB. Auction continues until player is sold for FAAB. These rookies are taxi eligible.

All owners must open enough available slots on their roster to import rookies added in the draft when the draft concludes. These slots must be opened by cutting current players on an owners roster.

Taxi deadline for rookie players comes a week before the start of the regular season. Drafted rookies can move in and out of taxi in the summer of their draft with no impact to their eligibility. Eligibility locks in the week before the regular season. Any holdover taxi players that are not rookies must remain in the taxi to keep eligibility.

IV. Trades, Adds/Drops, and Injured Reserve

In the 2014 season, trades are allowed until trade deadline date and can involve any players, but not draft picks or draft selection spots. All trades are accepted automatically and are non-debatable. A trade between any two owners that agree is an official, league accepted trade. In 2015, all of the same rules from 2014 apply, but draft picks can also be traded once the 2015 season begins. However, you cannot trade picks more than three drafts ahead (during 2015 season, you can trade up to your 2018 picks, but not beyond that). All free agent players are moved to waivers once their weeks game begins and they stay on waivers for the period that waivers lasts, as determined by the league site (currently Flea Flicker). All waiver wire transactions are kept in order by league site (currently Flea Flicker). In 2019, FAAB was introduced as the waiver wire system. FAAB is given as follows: $150 to start the year for all the previous year’s playoff teams. Increase by $5 for every team that did not make the playoffs in order of finish (7th gets $155…12th gets $180). FAAB can be traded. Injured reserve is a max of 2 in 2014. Starting in 2015, IR is a max of 2, meaning a team can have a potential of 19 players on the roster (max 14 veterans, 3 extra slots for rookies only, and 2 IR slots). In 2018, IR has no limit. IR eligibility determined by FleaFlicker. The only rule is a player must already be on your roster when they gain IR eligibility or you acquire the injured player via trade. You cannot pickup a free agent already injured and place them in your IR slots. For a free agent to be designated to the IR slot, a player must not have had IR/PUP/etc designation prior to pickup. Free Agent players that are designated to IR are eligible for pickup by teams, but cannot be placed into the IR slot.

V. Playoffs

The Kolasa Football Conference and Topete Football Conference will each have three representative teams in the playoffs each year. The regular season is 13 weeks long and the first playoff round starts week 14. The top team from each division receives a bye. The second and third place teams from each conference play each other in the first round. The second round matches up the first place conference winner versus the winner of the second place team and third place team from the previous week. The final week is the Will Carter Bowl between the KFC Champion and the TFC Champion. The elimination and losers brackets are all ordered properly by the league site (currently Flea Flicker). In the event that the playoff matchups do not play out correctly on the league site (currently Flea Flicker), the matchups will remain exactly as the league rules are setup and scores will be watched manually no matter what matchups are set by the league site. In 2021, the league split to three divisions. The GFC, KFC, and TFC will each have a division winner. These winners will receive seeds 1, 2, and 3 with the best record getting the top seed and so on (points-for is the tiebreaker). Top two seeds get bye weeks. Seeds 4, 5, and 6 are determined by best record (points-for tiebreaker) of the remaining non-division winners. 3 seed plays 6 seed. 4 seed plays 5 seed. The lowest remaining seed after round one plays the 1 seed in round two and the 2 seed plays the highest remaining seed from the first round.

VI. League Punishment

All owners, including the commissioner, are subject to being banished from the league if other league members determine the owner is any of the following: – An irresponsible owner; an owner who forgets to set a complete lineup two different weeks during the year, regular and postseason combined. – Losing/Hurting Team Purposely; an owner who trades away star players with low return, drops players that shouldn’t be dropped, or sets a lineup where they are benching players with higher potential i.e. tanking. The owner can be questioned about their reasoning and they must give a reasonable explanation for their actions. If no legitimate explanation can be given, they can be subject to a removal vote. – Poisonous/Disrespectful Owner; any owner can request a removal vote for another owner if they find the owner is beyond the reasonable limits of smack talking, board discussion, or emails/texts/calls. Essentially, don’t be afraid to talk smack, but know when a joke ends and being an asshole begins.

VII. Conclusion

All of the rules are subject to change if brought to a league vote. Majority (7 votes) will determine winning side. Any rules or guidelines not clearly written, explained, or implied in this document are not subject to loop-holes and will be determined by a league vote on the matter, should it arise.

Tim Martens, Commissioner

“Still Henry?”

A single text message from Tom Hazelhurst to fellow owner Aaron Mackel asking if he still believed it was the right call to start Derrick Henry on Thursday Night Football against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 14 of the 2018 Will Carter Season.

Years in the future, when each owner picks up his grandson and sits him on his leg to tell the story of this historic night, one detail could very easily be lost: the night almost never happened.

Worried about the output Henry could give his team, especially after an untimely release of Kareem Hunt and injury to AJ Green put his squad in shambles, Hazelhurst was having a hard time choosing between Henry and Ravens RB Ty Montgomery to be his flex starter in a pivotal first-round playoff matchup against defending Will Carter Bowl Champion Jim Ayello.

Tom had reason to have his doubts about Henry. In the 12 previous games in the 2018 season, Henry was averaging just 6.96 fantasy points a game. In his three year career of league play, Henry was averaging just 6.58 points per game.

“Still Henry?”

Hazelhurst knew the decision he was making could very well make or break his entire fantasy season. Yes, Henry had broken out for big games a few times before, but these outbursts were so few and far between. It is far more likely that Henry would end up with a score in the single digits than in the teens, twenties, thirties, or the almost unheard of forties.

But the fact was that Montgomery wasn’t exactly the best option either. Henry, while inconsistent, probably gave Tom the best chance to get a leg up. Playing against a Jacksonville defense that had under performed all season, maybe Henry could find a way to get into the end zone.

After sitting with Montgomery in his lineup for the entire week, Hazelhurst made the switch with five minutes to spare before kickoff lockout. He rolled the dice with it all on the line. But the question still ate at him as the ball was kicked into play. Was this the right call?

“Still Henry?”

Tom’s decision only took a few minutes to be confirmed as the right move. While it took until the Titans reached the Jaguars 19 yard line on their first drive for Henry to touch the ball, he quickly showed this night would be different. A run of 14 yards. A dive for 2 yards. A 3 yard dash off the left guard into the end zone. Three plays and Henry had racked up 7.9 points for Tom with 9:35 still remaining in the first quarter.

For Tom, this output for the entire game could have been considered successful. But Henry, who had only scored two rushing touchdowns in a single game twice in his career, was far from done.

Backed against his own goal line, the farthest distance an offensive player can be on the field from the end zone, Henry broke past his offensive line and ran left on what looked like a gain that would get the Titans out of field position trouble. But just as the thunderous waves crash upon Neptune’s sacred palace, Henry exploded into AJ Bouye, creating room for a historic rumble down the field. Several stiff arms later, Henry was gliding into the end zone to become only the second player to rush for a 99-year TD in NFL history

The damage was immediate. Henry had already tallied nearly 25 points for Hazelhurst’s team. But, only as the smartest predator knows, Henry/Hazelhurst double-tapped the opponent and made sure the beast was absolutely dead. Adding TD runs of 16 and 54 yards in the second half, Henry finished the evening with 238 rushing yards, 4 TDs, and (most importantly) the second highest RB output in Will Carter League history with 47.8 fantasy points.

From a questionable start to an incredible night, Henry had given Hazelhurst a lead of which had never been seen after a Thursday Night Football game, while Ayello had gone from fighting tooth and nail to make the playoffs on the very last night of the regular season to being all but eliminated three nights later.

At press time, Hazelhurst expressed his gratitude. “Legendary. He made up for his disappointing season in a huge way tonight.”

Finally asked by press if he had thoughts of who he would be starting in the flex position in the TFC Championship (should he advance), Hazelhurst, played it coy at first, saying he still needs to survive the week. But when pressed further for an official answer, he couldn’t resist replying with a smile:

“Still Henry.”

Will Carter Bowl XII

Arguably more exciting than the first week of the year and the Will Carter Bowl itself, draft day is a franchise changing moment for many teams. Finding the sleepers, avoiding the busts, and fixing the holes on a roster, each owner does their best to find the future stars of the league and add them to their roster.

There are many different tactics that owners have in the draft. For some, trading roster players to get higher up in the draft is the best strategy. For others, trading out of the first round or the draft all together is the best way to rebuild your team.

But one of the most interesting tactics ever seen in Will Carter history was that of Joe’s “Joe for Broke” roster in the second round of the 2016 Rookie Draft. With talent like Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, and Derrick Henry already off the board, Joe took a page right out of Jason Licht’s playbook. Just like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted kicker Roberto Aguayo in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, Joe decided that the 17th overall draft pick of the Will Carter Rookie Draft should be Aguyao.

Upon ridicule for the pick moments after the selection was made, Joe commented “Just wait. You’ll see.” It is unconfirmed if Joe’s binder of pie charts and bar graphs were on-hand during his draft that year.

Coming off a year where Joe’s relatively unknown kicker, Adam Vinatieri, averaged 8.3 points a game, Joe banked on Aguayo to come in and increase his weekly totals with unheard of kicker numbers. However, things didn’t go according to plan.

Aguayo averaged just 6.375 points per game in the 2016 season, making only 22 of his 31 field goal attempts. Included in this rough season for Aguayo was a tough season for Joe, where he finished 4-9. Looking deeper at the stats, we see a match-up during Week 2 where Joe lost to Jim by 4.9 points in which Chandler Catanzaro outscored Aguayo 11 to 1.

While Aguayo may have only directly cost Joe one game, there is also the fact Joe missed out on players such as Jordan Howard, Kenyan Drake, Dak Prescott, and Jared Goff, all drafted after Aguayo. Howard has averaged 12 points a game in his two years in the league thus far, Drake had 4 games of 15 points or more in the final 8 games of 2017, Prescott has averaged 17 points per game since entering the NFL, and Goff’s sophomore season had him averaging 17 points per game as well.

While we will never see a kicker drafted too early in the league again with the kicker position being eliminated from the rosters, we can always remember this Great Moment in Will Carter History…a fond memory for at least 11 members of the league.
